The Byerley Turk – The Legend
Founder of the modern Thoroughbred horse racing bloodstock – The Byerley Turk or Byerly Turk was one of the three stallions accounted for the rise of thoroughbred horse racing during 17th and early 18th Century; the other two being – Godolphin Arabian and Darley Arabian. History depicts that the stallion was captured by Captain Byerley at the Battle of Buda in the year 1686. He had served as a war horse to the Captain till he was sent to Ireland during King William’s War in the year 1689.
