Understanding The Bounce Factor in Horse Racing Handicapping

Fri ,31/10/2014

Much has been written and said about horses that throw in a clinker in the race following their top effort. When a horse races very hard and scores its highest speed figure in its career handicappers worry that it might bounce in its next race and run poorly. It does happen, but like everything else in horse racing there are several reasons and understanding them will help you to deal with this situation in your handicapping.

Defining Class, Speed, and Confidence As Horse Racing Handicapping Factors

Fri ,31/10/2014

As long as there have been horse races handicappers have argued about the definition of speed and class. One camp believes they are synonymous while others believe that a classier horse will beat a “cheap” horse even though the horse that supposedly has less class has earned a higher speed figure in a previous race. It is a very confusing debate. For instance, what if the higher speed figure was earned in a race with horses at a lower class level and therefore the pace was slower and made for a faster final time?

The subject of betting on horse races is complex and involves many considerations. This short horse racing betting article is meant as a place to start and not the final word on betting. To sum it up and give us a starting point, the goal is profit and the way we arrive at a profit is to find wagers that have a positive expectancy. In other words, if you risk $100 you’ll get back more than $100. There are no guarantees in racing. It is gambling and therefore you could lose everything you risk. Every calculation we make is based on projections.

Horse Racing Gambling Tips and Advice For Beating The Races

Wed ,29/10/2014

There’s a lot of hype about horse racing and many gamblers operate with false information and misconceptions about how to make a profit from horse racing betting. Pari-mutuel betting makes it difficult to make a consistent profit from wagering on horse races, especially in North America where the bettor never really knows how much his wager will pay. The problem is that the odds fluctuate and are not finalized until the race starts and the pools are closed.

Handicapping The Pick Three, Pick Four, And Other Multiple Leg Wagers

Tue ,28/10/2014

The multiple leg wagers like pick threes and fours may offer value to the wise handicapper who knows what to look for. Some shopping around, however, is necessary. Just blindly betting every multi-leg wager that comes along will not necessarily lead to profits. As in almost all other facets of handicapping for value, just betting every race won’t pay off in the long run. Finding value in your handicapping and wagering on horse races requires research and diligence. It starts by understanding which situations are most likely to produce a payoff that offsets costs and offers a profit.

Horse Racing Handicapping Factors That Work Together to Produce Winning Picks

Tue ,28/10/2014

While many horse racing handicappers know what the main handicapping factors are, many of them don’t know how to use them efficiently so that each one works in concert with the other to produce winning picks. For instance, the combination of pace and speed is often misunderstood. The pace of the race often determines the final speed of the race and can dictate whether the race is abnormally fast or slow for that class of horse and distance.

Horse Racing Tips for Handicapping Using Two Factors and the Odds

Mon ,27/10/2014

There are no substitutes for good in-depth handicapping that analyzes many factors and identifies a good bet based on probability and payoff. However, there are ways to narrow down the field of contenders and to find what may be a profitable bet using two factors and the odds at post time. Just be aware that because the odds may change after the race starts and the betting is shut down, you may or may not make a profit. In other words, betting on horse races is risky.

Helpful Horse Racing Handicapping Thoughts After Five Decades

Mon ,27/10/2014

I started going to the races as a kid. My grandfather, a guy who had homesteaded in Montana, worked the big ranches and probably knew more about horses than anyone I’ve ever known, took me. Since then horses have always been a part of my life one way or another. I’ve owned some horses and I’ve driven and ridden them, but I never really became a horseman. It’s important for a man or a handicapper to know his limitations. I do know some things about horses.

Handicapping Profits Are Made In the Last Minutes Before Post Time

Fri ,24/10/2014

If you’re like many of us handicappers you probably spend a lot of time handicapping races, reviewing replays, and doing your research. That is all important and must be done to win at what is arguably the most difficult of all intellectual sports, namely, handicapping. There is, however, an important time frame that few handicappers understand or use effectively. I’m talking about the last few minutes before post.

Breeding and Training Are Keys to Maiden Winners

Fri ,24/10/2014

Using trainer patterns effectively in maiden races can lead to horse racing betting profits. The best way to do that is to match sire specific traits to trainers who are most effective with horses that exhibit those features. For instance, a trainer who likes to slowly bring along a horse and race it into condition isn’t likely to benefit much from a maiden that is from a sire that throws precocious foals.
