Using Place, Show, and Exactas to Back Up Your Bets

While I advocate win bets as the best way to wager on horse races in many situations, I do agree that there are times when backing up a bet is a good idea. That usually occurs when you’re wagering on a longshot and think there’s an excellent chance that your horse at high odds will at least finish in one of the top three positions. That means your longshot will hit the board and when it does, you want to cash a ticket on that runner to validate your handicapping skill and opinion. The problem is which way to back it up?

The first type of handicapping is common handicapping which includes the sub-types: base common and advanced common. This article is about the secret of advanced common. The second type is statistical (sub-types: base and advanced). Base common is where the use of one major factor, system or method to rank your horses. Advanced common is where you use 2 or more major factors, systems or methods to rank the horses. The next article will be about the second type of handicapping: statistical. Specifically base statistical or its’ first sub-type.

Horse Racing Handicapping Angle – When Bad Is Good

If you want to make a profit betting on horse races you have to learn to spot a good bet. “But which horse racing bet is the best?” you may ask. The answer is any bet that the crowd doesn’t go crazy for is a good one. In other words, if a horse looks great on paper and appears to be head and shoulders above the rest of the runners it will get most of the crowd’s money and even if it does win it will pay very little. In the long run such horses and wagers just eat up your bankroll.

When you’re handicapping a race, if you’re looking for value bets, you’re trying to spot a situation in which a horse will run worse or better than it raced previously. Sometimes the change you’re looking for is due to a horse that is being raced into condition or perhaps a favorite that is started to fall prey to the stress of racing and which will not race up to the crowd’s expectation. As handicappers we often focus on changes in form due to short spans of time while overlooking the bigger picture of time and aging as a factor in a horse’s performance.

Of the millions of people who bet on horse races every day, many are good handicappers and can accurately estimate a horse’s chance of winning. Think of the betting pools as an open market where the shoppers get to set their own price on the products being offered. That’s what happens in pari-mutuel wagering and that’s why it’s so hard to find a good bet. Obviously, if you’re trying to make a profit you need wagers that are under-valued by the rest of the public, but when many of them are capable of estimating the value of the products it’s difficult to find a good bargain. Ask yourself, “What does it take for the bettors to under estimate the value of a horse?”

How To Handicap A Horse Race and Make Money From Your Bets

There are many different ways that people use to choose their bets at the horse races. Some people play win bets and place bets while others play the exotics like the exacta, trifecta, pick three or pick four, and so forth. Some people mix them all up and play a little of each. The main difference that that you’ll find between the people who bet on horse races may be used to separate them into two groups. There are people who try to pick winners and winning bets and there are people who try to make a living or a profit by picking good bets. That is a world of difference.
