How To Handicap Horse Racing Workouts and Trainers

Workouts are a good way to evaluate horses, but only if you understand what the trainer was trying to accomplish with the work. In order to understand the meaning of a workout, say a three furlong work in an even 36 seconds, you must also know how fast the track was that day and also how fit the horse is and where it is in its form cycle. For instance, when a horse is in mid-season form you don’t have to work it super hard. The purpose of a workout is simply to keep the horse sharp and to get it out of the barn and remind it that it’s a race horse. Working such a runner too hard may be counter productive.
