There is no shortcut to success when it comes to horse racing handicapping. If you choose to find your own best bets you will have to learn to evaluate the horses and then make a decision of whether or not to bet on a horse depending on the odds that are offered and the probability that you have calculated for the horse winning. There are ways to find good bets without handicapping, but you will have to rely on the opinions of others.

How Often Does the Fastest Horse Win the Race

If the fastest horse always won the race it would be impossible to take bets on the race because no one would bet against it. By fastest I mean the horse that showed more speed in previous races. That brings up the thorny problem of how you actually figure out which horse is faster. Handicapping horse races is an intellectual sport, similar to chess and other games where you pit your skill at accessing situations against your opponents. In this case the opponent may be the other bettors when it’s pari-mutuel betting or the house if you’re betting at a sportsbook or bookie where they take your action and then pay out the odds that they set.

The Two Race Handicapping Angle

Horse racing angles are merely situations or conditions that the bettor looks for that shows a horse may be ready to win a race. One such situation involves a trainer move that often results in a better performance by a horse. Fiorente wins the 2013 Melbourne Cup

Is Betting On Horse Races Gambling Or Investing?

You have probably heard someone at some time state that he or she is such a good handicapper, so good at picking horses, that it isn’t gambling, it’s investing. Obviously, it does take skill to pick winners and to make money betting on horse races. While a person who goes to the races for the first time may have beginner’s luck and win some money, if he or she goes back a few times that luck will evaporate and the money will be lost back with interest. After handicapping and betting on horse races for many years I can tell you this based on my own personal experience.
