Kentucky Derby Picks for Horse Racing’s Premiere North American Race

Here are a few Kentucky Derby tips. First of all, breeding is especially important and you need a horse that can run the classic distances. The great front runner Shackleford demonstrated the importance of breeding when he came up a little short in the Derby at 1 3/16 miles, but came back and won the Preakness at the shorter distance that he was bred for. So use Dosage, or the ratings that the past performances supply to rate the horses for distance. Take the top 5 horses as your initial contenders.

2012 Triple Crown Late Nominations

They say everybody has to start somewhere and the same is true of young race horses who are starting a career in racing. The problem for bettors who want to wager on races with horses who have never raced before, known as “first time starters, or (FTS),” is that it is hard to assess their ability and therefore would be punters don’t know whether to bet on them or against them. Some handicapping gurus advise you to skip any race with an FTS. However you may miss a lot of races that way, especially in the spring when the maidens are flooding the scene. Pick Winning Horses With a Little Handicapping and Observation

When I am asked what the best handicapping method is to pick winning horses I usually tell people that it depends on the situation and the races. I don’t handicap a maiden race the same way I evaluate a claiming race for older horses. I also don’t handicap each race track the same. I do look at the pace and track model and evaluate each runner based on its recent form and speed as well as secondary factors like the jockey and trainer. There is no magic formula for all this and the only way to explain how I became a horse player is to say it was an accident of birth.

If you’d like to learn how to handicap a horse race the first thing you must understand is that each horse race is a separate and unique event. There may be similarities between horse races, but because each one involves a unique mix of riders and runners, no two races are exactly the same.
